Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT MY PRACTICE

1. What services do you offer?

I provide individual counseling for teens and adults, as well as consulting services for parents, educators, churches, and organizations. My specialties include mental health, technology addiction, grief, and relationship challenges. I offer a compassionate, research-based approach to help clients find healing, balance, and personal growth.

2. Who do you work with?

I work with teens and adults experiencing technology addiction, depression, anxiety, suicidality, grief, and relationship struggles. Whether you’re navigating a major life transition, coping with loss, or feeling overwhelmed, I provide a safe, supportive space to process and heal.

3. Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

Yes, I offer both in-person and virtual sessions to provide flexibility based on your needs and comfort level. Virtual sessions are conducted through a secure telehealth platform to ensure privacy and accessibility.

4. Do you provide faith-based counseling?

Yes, if desired. I respect and integrate faith into therapy based on your personal beliefs. Whether you want to explore spiritual questions, strengthen your faith, or connect faith with your emotional well-being, I tailor therapy to align with your values.

GETTING STARTED

5. How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment by calling or texting 757-561-6889 or filling out the contact form on my website. I will reach out to discuss availability, answer any questions, and help determine if we’re a good fit.

6. What should I expect in the first session?

Our first session is about understanding your concerns, goals, and history. I’ll ask questions to learn about your challenges, strengths, and what you hope to achieve in therapy. Together, we’ll create a personalized plan to support your healing and growth.

7. How long are sessions, and how often will we meet?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes. How often we meet depends on your needs—some clients prefer weekly sessions for steady progress, while others may choose biweekly or monthly sessions as they gain tools to navigate challenges on their own.

8. How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy is beneficial for anyone feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or struggling with mental health challenges. You don’t have to be in crisis to seek support—whether you’re dealing with anxiety, grief, relationships, or life transitions, therapy offers a safe space to explore, heal, and grow.

9. What if I don’t think we’re the right fit?

Finding the right therapist is important, and I want you to feel comfortable. If at any point you feel I’m not the best fit for your needs, I will gladly provide referrals to other professionals who may be a better match.

INSURANCE & PAYMENT

10. Why don’t you take insurance?

I choose not to work with insurance because it requires me to provide a mental health diagnosis, which becomes part of your permanent medical record and may limit your treatment options. Insurance companies also dictate how therapy is conducted, often restricting session frequency and length. By remaining private pay, I can provide fully confidential, flexible, and client-centered care tailored to your unique needs.

11. Can I get reimbursed through my insurance?

While I do not bill insurance directly, I can provide a superbill, a detailed invoice that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement. I encourage you to check with your insurance company to understand your out-of-network mental health benefits, as coverage varies. If you need assistance navigating this process, I’m happy to guide you.

12. Do you accept HSA or FSA payments?

Yes! We accept both Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) payments for therapy services. If you have an HSA or FSA debit card, you can use it just like a regular credit card. If you need documentation for reimbursement, we are happy to provide it.

SPECIALTIES & APPROACH

13. What is a digital health and wellness therapist?

As a certified digital health and wellness therapist, I specialize in helping individuals and families navigate the effects of technology on mental health. I address issues like screen overuse, social media addiction, gaming addiction, and difficulty setting digital boundaries. My approach helps clients regain control, establish balance, and develop healthier relationships with technology.

14. How do you help with technology addiction?

I use a holistic approach that focuses on self-awareness, healthy habit formation, and emotional regulation. We’ll assess how technology impacts your mental health, relationships, and daily life, then develop practical strategies to reduce screen overuse, manage triggers, and re-engage with meaningful offline activities.

15. What if my child/teen is struggling with technology use?

I work with both teens and parents to address unhealthy technology habits. With teens, I provide guidance on self-regulation, healthy digital habits, and emotional well-being. For parents, I offer practical strategies for setting boundaries, improving communication, and creating a tech-balanced home environment.

16. How do you support clients experiencing grief?

Grief is unique to each person, and I provide a compassionate space where you can process loss in your own way. Whether you’re grieving the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or another major life change, I help you navigate the emotions, develop coping strategies, and find meaning while honoring your loss.

17. Do you offer consulting for parents, schools, churches, or organizations?

  • Technology & Mental Health – Addressing digital wellness, screen time boundaries, and the impact of social media.

  • Parenting & Family Dynamics – Guidance on adolescent development, emotional regulation, and effective communication.

  • Grief & Loss Support – Helping individuals and communities navigate loss with healthy coping strategies.

  • Anxiety, Depression & Suicidality Awareness – Identifying warning signs and appropriate interventions.
